Super foods?

Has anyone else looked at the calendar lately? Yes we are about a month away from summer and personally I have yet to put the cookie jar away. While fitness is important, healthy eating is also something that we need to pay attention to.
According to the CDC or the Center for Disease Control 1 in 3 American adults are obese which is contradictory to the 75% of Americans who stated that they are living healthy lifestyles on NPR poll. These facts started to make me think and also remove all junk food from my house (yes, even the cookies). As we know healthy eating includes your fruits, veggies, complex carbs and lean protein. However, what are things that we aren’t eating. Yes ladies and gentlemen I am talking about super foods!

Here are five that we may or may not eat daily.

Tomatoes

We are talking about raw and fresh tomatoes not the kind found on your extra large pizza. These super foods contain an antioxidant, which is not common to most food. Lycopene is known to prevent certain cancers and even protect our skin from UV rays.

Blueberries
Put a little in yogurt or add some to your morning shake! Blueberries are full of phytonutrients that help protect us against aging radicals and cell damage.

Broccoli
Broccoli is a great source of vitamin C and folic acid. These green veggies may also help reduce the risk of tumors and cancer!

Steel cut Oats
Lately we see a lot of granola bars, oat cereals and oatmeal in every grocery store. Oats are a great source of fiber and can even prevent type 2 diabetes.

Chia seeds
Native to Mexico these little seeds are very nutrient rich. They contain fiber, calcium and omega 3 fatty acids. These are perfect to throw in your smoothies or even soaking them overnight for a guilt free pudding.
